500Hz vs 1000Hz Polling Rate for a Gaming Mouse: Which is Better?

Polling rate refers to how often your mouse reports its position to the computer. A higher polling rate means that your mouse reports its position more frequently, which can result in more accurate tracking and reduced input lag. A 1000Hz polling rate means that the mouse is reporting its position to the computer 1000 times per second, while a 500Hz polling rate means that the mouse is reporting its position 500 times per second.

Which polling rate is better for gaming?

A higher polling rate can provide a more responsive and accurate mouse movement, which is particularly important for gaming and other tasks requiring precision. However, the difference between a 500Hz and 1000Hz polling rate may not be noticeable to everyone and may depend on factors such as the user’s skill level and the type of game or application being used. As a gamer myself, I would recommend that you use 1000Hz as using a lower polling rate may cause unwanted latency and lower accuracy when aiming.

Polling rate (Hz)Time to reach CPU (milliseconds)
1258
2504
5002
10001
40000.25
80000.125

You would notice in the picture above that lower polling rates tend to skip between frames. These small skips in between the frames will feel like micro stutters while playing a game that requires quick reflexes or high action-per-minute. 500Hz and 1000Hz are simply the best polling rate for gaming. Though both 500Hz and 1000hz polling rates may give a smoother experience, 1000Hz would have an advantage because of how quicker the CPU would receive your input.

You also need to consider the other factors that might affect precision like the physical quality of the mouse, the DPI setting, and mouse sensitivity. Having a high polling will only supplement these factors to improve the accuracy and precision of your aim.

A higher polling rate like 1000hz will also use more energy, if you are using a wireless mouse it might cause it to drain faster compared to a wireless mouse that is set to at least 500hz

For gaming purposes, a 1000Hz polling rate is generally considered the optimal choice for gaming mice, as it provides the highest level of responsiveness and accuracy. This can be especially important for competitive gaming, where every millisecond can make a difference in performance. Though, some mice like the Razer Viper 8KHz can use a far higher polling rate for a more responsive experience and most of the reviews are mostly positive about it, just remember that the advantage given by a higher polling rate has diminishing returns.
