RG Freedom Gundam Review

RG Freedom Gundam is based on the Gundam of the main protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED, Kira Yamato. This particular model kit is just a rescaled version of the Master Grade(1/100) Freedom to fit the Real Grade scale of 1/144.

The RG Freedom Gundam is one of the first RG models from the line, and as such, it comes with a plethora of features similar to its MG counterparts.

Build Experience

Building experience with this kit is quite fun if you like a building experience almost the same as a Master Grade. For experienced Gunpla builders, this would be a blast but for beginners, it might be overwhelming and complicated.

There are so many parts to take note of and keep track of because there are too many small pieces that can be easily lost. Sometimes some of the instructions are showing too many steps in a panel on the page, it also doesn’t help that the manual comes in Japanese.

I finished this kit within 2 hours just assembling the RG Freedom without being too meticulous. If you want to ink or weather the RG kit it will take more time.

Articulation 

The articulation of the RG Freedom Gundam is excellent. This Gunpla is top tier when it comes to its articulation.

The whole kit’s excellent articulation is thanks to the RG internal frame that acts as a skeleton and makes it possible for the model kit to pose in realistic positions. One gripe I have with the frame used by the RG Freedom is that the arms don’t have the ability to swing forward like in the RG Wing Gundam.

The armor of this Gundam is also articulated. Some of the notable armor gimmicks this model has are the side skirts that can transform into blaster cannons and thrusters behind the legs.

Another neat thing is that the cockpit also opens like in the Master grade kits the difference is that the RG version has no detailed cockpit and only has the opening hatch.

when it comes to the limbs, the armors on the arm and legs would articulate whenever you bend them. The feet also have a slight articulation on the toes but it is barely noticeable.

The wings of the RG Freedom are fully adjustable and also hide the two iconic blaster cannons of the Freedom.

When it comes to poseability, the RG Freedom is also excellent but it is also a giant pain in the butt to pose.

Apparently, having so many moving parts is really annoying. Posing this Gundam is frustrating sometimes, some of the parts are either loose or moving a certain part would also affect another part of the model.

This problem is more noticeable in the wings, most of the time the wings are not really cooperative and would just droop down after posing it. I am also nervous when posing any part of this kit because parts just feel too fragile to move. The wings, in particular, are the most fragile part of the kit, they are thin and parts would just fall apart when moving it.

Accessories

The model comes with:

• a rifle and a hand to hold the rifle,
• Two long beam sabers and two handles,
• two closed fist
• one open left hand
• two articulated hands
• a shield

The rifle can be stored on the back of the RG Freedom by just attaching it to the back skirt of the Gundam. Both of the sword handles can be stored on the side skirts. While the shield is attached to the forearm of the Gundam. The rest of the accessories, I just threw in the box.

The sword handles also can combine and make a two-sided blade Darth Maul style.

The shield is really neat, the handle it has is adjustable, The handle has three pegs that can attach to a series of pegs holes in the shield. You can put the handle in a higher position or just make it flat and just have the shield hang by the elbow connector.

Most of the time I won’t remove the hand attached to the rifle. It is kind of annoying removing it. I also don’t store the sword handles in the side skirts because it is not secured enough and would just fall most of the time.

Accessories falling off would be kind of the norm with this model kit.

Conclusion

The RG Freedom Gundam is one of the best of the RG lineup when it comes to possibility and aesthetics. It is really cool looking with a huge potential for poses. but it is also a fragile model. I guess some sacrifices have to be made to make its feature and poseability on par with Master Grade and still make it small enough to fit the 1/144 scale.

With that said, It is a Gunpla recommended for builders that are more experienced. I will not recommend any beginner to pick this up as their first RG kit or their first Gunpla model.
